Help Our Homeless Communities by Downloading this Song

The East Nashville music scene has not only proven itself when it comes to modern musical talent and creativity, but has also shown themselves to work largely and effectively as a community like no other music scene when it comes to supporting humanitarian causes.

The latest effort is being led by internationally known songwriter/musician, Tim Easton (Last Chance Records) and director/writer/photographer/public speaker, Stacie Huckeba, with the label support of Cafe Rooster Records. The project is a video and single of an obscure Bob Dylan cover, “Rocks and Gravel,” recorded at Eastside Manor, Easton on lead vocals with backing band, Cordovas, and special guests singer/songwriters Megan Palmer, Julie Christensen and Aaron Lee Tasjan, and will be premiered Thanksgiving week as a call for donations to support Nashville’s homeless individuals, families and their pets.

What better time than the holidays for these artists to raise money and awareness for Southern Alliance for People and Animal Welfare (SAFPAW), a non-profit organization helping the homeless community face the daily challenges of living in poverty with their pets. Their pet services help those housed but living at or below the poverty level. SAFPAW also serves as an active Homeless Outreach Organization.

“I met Laurie Green last November when I did some homeless outreach myself. I wanted to spend my holidays giving back to those less fortunate, but I wanted to find those who weren’t part of the system. The ones overlooked by the Salvation Army, or organizations with lots of volunteers or the funding to make celebrity photo opps happen,” says Huckeba.

Laurie Green is the sole employee of SAFPAW and draws zero salary. Last year Huckeba spent two weeks with Green driving out to remote areas and hiking into homeless camps - arms full of propane, sleeping bags, food and necessities. Many of the people Green helps are veterans with PTSD, and she works to help them get their benefits and health care. Those who are not, she sometimes brings back to her tiny office to help them find jobs or programs to get them off the streets. Once a week, she makes the rounds picking up their pets and taking them to the vet to have them spayed, neutered or have proper immunizations and then delivers them back safe and sound the next day. She helps women and children find safe transitional housing, gets them into the system, gets the kids into schools and still manages to make sure those kids have a proper Christmas.

Huckeba goes on to say of Green, “I’ve never been more inspired by anyone in my life. I’ve never met anyone more dedicated to helping others.”
